Cotter Bros Firewood is operated by the young Cotter brothers, Jack and Nick Cotter. It is a local farm business, based on producing and selling high quality ready to burn, WFQA (Wood Fuel Quality Assurance) certified firewood.

Cotter Bros Firewood was started by my brother Jack and I in Autumn 2011. We came up with the idea of selling firewood door to door in the wintertime. We hashed out the idea and thought there could be money in it. Everyone needs to heat their home and most houses have a chimney. At the time I was 11 and in 5th class in Dromtrasna National School and Jack was 14 in 1st year in Colaiste Ide Agus Iosef.

To see if there was a market for firewood I wrote up a survey and handed it out to the teachers and students at my school. The response was very good and we decided to go ahead with our idea.
With the help of our friend Ilmar transporting us around in the jeep and trailer, we began selling Cotter Bros Firewood door to door in Abbeyfeale. 

It was a great experience for us at a young age, building our confidence, making sales in person and over the phone. Due to the repeat order nature of the business, we built up a base of loyal customers and we started to earn a reputation for providing good, dry firewood with a friendly service. 

In recognition of the quality of our firewood and the quality assurance process we operate we received WFQA Certification from Minister Tom Hayes TD at the 2013 & 2015 Ploughing Championships where they were exhibiting for the three days of the show.

WFQA is Ireland’s Wood Fuel Quality Assurance scheme. It enables consumers to trust WFQA certified suppliers to supply reliable, high-quality wood fuels. Being certified under this nationally recognised, independent quality assurance scheme is essential in our opinion, so customers have confidence in the quality of your firewood and labels.

Look For The Label

We produce 20cm long ready to burn firewood which is sold in a wide range of branded packaging from net bags to bulk bags to loose loads. 

We believe in doing things right. We have never sold wet, imported or artificially dried firewood or any fossil fuel. It is Irish, local, carbon neutral and creates local jobs, the best kind.  

To provide confidence and transparency to our customers we publish a Public Price List which not only guarantees all our firewood is under 25% or 20% moisture content, but also guarantees minimum volumes and weights for all our products.

We state the cost of our firewood products in 'cent per kWh' so customers and prospective customers can compare the cost of heating with Cotter Bros Firewood against the cost of heating with oil, coal, gas and electricity.

We believe this will give home-owners the information and confidence they need to make the change from heating with imported fossil fuels to locally produced firewood, a move which is good for the environment, will create local jobs and which will save them money.
